Many things found in the Motifs trickled down from the Tyros and these newer PSRs are mini-Tyros machines. I haven't played the PSR-S950 but I don't find that claim to be outrageous.

Mmm, for the best sounds on a portable and not too expensive board, I would choose a PSR-S950, I tried it and found many of the sounds better than the motif line (!) That are great tools for practicing and sketching ideas. To me, the challenge is reviewing all the available styles and memorizing them enough to know what to use for a given song, since there are literally thousands to choose from.Īs you point out, though, the arranger can't emulate the quirks and personalities of real musicians. Many of them are, of course, varations of existing style, but there is enough nuance to keep it interesting. In the Yamaha arranger user groups, people are constantly adding new styles. Mopho, just like with any other "deep" instrument, getting to understand it well goes a long way to keeping the variety fresh. But I understand the charm of controlling everything from one single keyboard. I prefer real life musicians with their own quirks and peculiarities. Hmm, they are intriguing but for me I would get stuck in a rut of using the same kinds of arrangements - that would make me bored after a while. Had fun this Saturday afternoon testing a lot of arranger workstations. Local GC here in San Jose has most of them, even Tyros. Like I said arrangers are a whole other world that most here know nothing about. Then, it's like wow, I had no idea a Tyros can sound like that.

You need to hear a real pro who knows all about it and has spent the time setting everything up and has also learned how to actually play using his touch with some of those voices. You hear someone who is maybe not the best person playing an arranger and think, meh.

Don't forget a lot of those sounds are deeply hidden in program banks that may not be obvious plus all these keyboards like my PC3 have all the real time sliders and such that control and shape the sound live while they're playing. See, the the thing is everybody here is thinking of the absolute best, killer Rhodes or whatever sound a dedicated big name synth can produce like a Motif or my Kurzweil. You'll be blown away by what a good player can do who is familar with those boards Very true, anybody who doubts the sound quality of the Tyros 4 or Korg Pa3XPro needs to check out some Youtube vids. For lots of other people though they would be perfectly satisfied with just my Korg for everything.Ī guy could be a killer pro player with 30 years experience who knows all about the big name stage keyboards but if he doesn't do regular one man band gigs with arrangers then he won't have a clue where to begin to review a Tyros, the Roland G70 or the new Korg which I would love to have btw but it's big bucks.

For me like a lot of guys here, I'm a perfectionist and while my Korg has full digital drawbars for organ it's not close to the XK1 and it also has pretty good AP's and EP's, those are not close to my PC3 so there ya go. The top arrangers have an excellent sound set and there's really no need for any other keyboards for most situations. I get a kick out of it because the audience can tell I'm not just playing tracks like most small acts do, they see me actually controlling this complex beast, I'm hitting drum fills, style variations, different intro's and endings, tempo's and other things live and people will come up to ask how am I doing all of this? Playing an arranger is definitely part of the show.

I did a series of gigs at a local indian casino where we had a nice JBL PA and it was just me on my Korg and a sax player and yes, it can really kick some serious butt. Even though I tend to lean more towards the pro player side of things, I've said for years a good arranger is a lot of fun to jam with sometimes but like anything else you have to really learn how it works first or you won't get the best out of it. The reason I'm writing this is I have the older Korg Pa1xPro for my one man band single or duo gigs and then I have my Hammond XK1 and Kurz PC3 for my other regular band stuff. I really like Fortner's reviews and read him all the time and watch his videos but I have no idea if he really knows arrangers or not. You're not going to see that Pa3X or a Tyros 4 on stage at an Elton John concert or anybody else's concert. Keyboard Mag has always been geared towards profesional keyboardists and star player master classes and such.

They also require a completely different mindset too. Arranger keyboards are in a whole other universe from all the "regular" synths we write about here.
